Aberdeen

Welcome to Aberdeen

Neighbourhood Features

Aberdeen is located in the Southern District of Hong Kong, facing across from Ap Lei Chau, with the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter in between. Once a settlement for the boat-dwellers, the neighbourhood is known for its fishing village. It is also one of the earliest inhabited areas in Hong Kong.

As many boat residents had moved ashore since 1950, the government launched the 'South Island Revitalization' project to enhance the facilities in the area. It includes improving the waterfront land in Aberdeen, revitalizing the Aberdeen fish wholesale market, and expanding the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter.

With the development of urban planning, Aberdeen has transformed from a fishing village into a mix of commercial and residential hubs. The area is equipped with comprehensive facilities such as country parks, waterfront parks and other green spaces.

In terms of transportation, the MTR Corporation plans to improve the local transportation by extending the South Island Line to upcoming Aberdeen Station. Currently, the main access in and out of the area relies on the Aberdeen Tunnel, while residents can also travel to nearby Ap Lei Chau or Wong Chuk Hang transiting to other areas.

Residential Distribution

Residential areas in the district are mainly concentrated in the city center, Tin Wan, and the eastern part of Aberdeen, mainly housing estates and public housing. The housing in the city center is relatively dense, yet adjacent to beautiful surroundings such as the Aberdeen Country Park and the Waterfront Park.

Some of the private residential buildings in this area include Aberdeen Centre, Jadewater, Bayshore Apartments, and Comfort Centre. The residential area in Tin Wan is separated from the city center by a Chinese cemetery and is also close to the fish wholesale market. Some of the estates in this area include South Walk・Aura, Waterfront South, and Full Jade Mansion. The eastern residential area has a lower population density, close to Wong Chuk Hang and the seaside, including Ocean Court, Jing Hui Garden, and Seaview Court.
