Neighbourhood Features
Ap Lei Chau is an island located opposite the southern part of Hong Kong Island, separated by a bridge from Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang. The island residents were only able to travel to the city by ferry before the construction of the Ap Lei Chau Bridge. In the 1980s, The bridge was in operation, connecting Ap Lei Chau to other parts of the city. Since then, public housing estates and private residential developments were built in the area.
Ap Lei Chau has a high population density, with residential developments concentrated in the west and north, close to the island’s major shopping area and green spaces. The eastern part boasts luxurious seafront residences, while the southern and central areas enjoy the natural environment of Mount Johnston.
Many private residential complexes in the area have their own clubhouse, offering ample recreational facilities for residents. The main shopping facilities are located within the housing estates, while additional options can be found in the city centers of Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang, where a variety of restaurants and shops are readily available.
With the opening of the South Island MTR Line, Ap Lei Chau residents can conveniently commute to and from the Hong Kong Island area via the South Horizons and Lei Tung MTR stations, significantly alleviating the traffic burden on the Aberdeen Tunnel.
