5 reasons why living in Mong Kok is great

Hong Kong Living | June 27, 2016

Mong Kok is great. In fact, it’s one of my favourite places in Hong Kong hands down. Some might argue that it’s not as chic as Sheung Wan or as alternative as Sham Shui Po, but as a well-established hub for those living in Kowloon, Mong Kok is a place where almost anything is possible. Of course, it’s meant in the sense where you can virtually find anything you want to do there, or go anywhere you need to.

Easy transport links

With an East Rail station, two MTR lines and countless bus stops, Mong Kok is a place where you can really go anywhere from. You are 15 minutes from Central via the Central Line on MTR; you can hop on the East Rail and be in Shenzhen in 45 minutes or less; you can take a bus down to Tsim Sha Tsui or Hong Kong Island – the list goes on.

Markets, markets, markets

Flower market, check; Birds Market, check; Ladies market, check; Fa Yuen Street? It is kind of a market, so checked! Mong Kok is home to tons of markets and you would never get bored there. Markets are more than just a place where you buy what you want or need, they also offer an atmosphere and a sense of community for those who visit them.

Great street food

With markets you would certainly expect to find street food. Egg waffles, chicken fillets, fruit juice, bubble tea, loaded fries, ice cream cookie sandwich – there are no ends to the kind of street food or snacks you can find in Mong Kok. The main hub for the street food activities are at the end of Mong Kok near Yau Ma Tei.

Restaurants everywhere

If standing up and eating your food on the street isn’t your thing, then fear not – because there are plenty of restaurants to choose from! From chain stores in air conditioned shopping mall to upstairs cafes in obscure buildings that take more than just google map to find, you get everything for every budget.

Gyms everywhere

Now that you have eaten so much, perhaps it’s time to think about some exercise. There are plenty of gyms, yoga studio, Thai boxing studios in Mong Kok. While you might want to be careful which one you pick, there are no more than enough to choose from that would satisfy anybody.
